Al-Hoceima

The Mediterranean Jewel of the Rif Coast

About Al-Hoceima

Al-Hoceima is a captivating coastal city nestled between the Rif Mountains and a brilliant blue Mediterranean bay. One of Morocco's least-touristed coastal destinations, it offers exceptional beaches, pristine national park waters, and a deeply felt Amazigh Rifian identity that distinguishes it from any other Moroccan city.

Welcome to Al-Hoceima

Al-Hoceima occupies a privileged position on Morocco's northern coast — a compact city wedged between the mineral-blue water of the Mediterranean and the green ridges of the Rif Mountains, at the heart of the Baie d'Al Hoceïma. For travellers who make the effort to reach it, the reward is a city of genuine authenticity: fewer tour groups, local restaurants serving the freshest fish caught hours earlier, and some of the clearest coastal waters in the entire Mediterranean basin.

The city and its surrounding coastline lie within and adjacent to the Al Hoceima National Park — one of Morocco's most ecologically significant protected areas, declared in 2004 and covering 480 km² of marine and terrestrial habitat. The park's protected status has preserved the extraordinary water clarity that makes the coastline so visually spectacular.

Why Visit Al-Hoceima?

  • Extraordinary beaches: Quemado Beach (in the city bay), Cala Iris, Tighzarine, and the remote coves of the national park rank among Morocco's finest and least crowded
  • Al Hoceima National Park: Pristine marine and mountain protected area with sea caves, cliff-nesting Audouin's gulls, and hiking trails above the Mediterranean
  • Amazigh Rifian culture: The city is a center of Tarifit-speaking Amazigh culture, distinct from the Tachelhit of the south or the Tamazight of the Middle Atlas
  • Authentic, unhurried pace: Al-Hoceima receives a fraction of the tourists of northern Morocco's other destinations — an increasingly rare quality
  • Historical depth: The Rif region is the heartland of one of the most significant anti-colonial resistance movements in 20th-century Moroccan history
