Into the Sahara: How to Plan Your Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga

The journey from Fes to Merzouga is one of the great overland adventures in Africa. Here's how to plan it, what to expect, and the best way to get there by bus.

Few journeys in Morocco match the drama of crossing the Middle Atlas, descending through cedar forests, skirting the edge of the Todra Gorge, and finally arriving at the endless golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. This is a trip every Morocco traveller should make at least once.

The Route

The classic overland route from Fes to Merzouga covers approximately 570 km and takes 8–10 hours by bus or shared taxi. Major stops along the way include Ifrane, Midelt, Er-Rachidia, and Erfoud before the final stretch to Merzouga.

Getting There by Bus

CTM operates a direct overnight service from Fes to Er-Rachidia, from where shared taxis cover the final 80 km to Merzouga. Supratours also has services via Errachidia. Check Mosafir for current departure times and book in advance during peak season.

What to Do in Merzouga

Sunrise and sunset camel treks into the dunes are the signature experience. Most camps offer overnight stays with traditional Berber music around a fire. For something more active, quad biking and 4x4 excursions into the wider Erg Chebbi are popular.

Best Time to Visit

October to April is ideal. Summer temperatures in the Sahara regularly exceed 45°C — not recommended for most travellers. The coolest and most atmospheric time is between November and February.
